ActiveTuning 03.5-05 Nissan Altima/Sentra STS1 Short Throw Shifter

Tools Required:
  • Phillips screwdriver and pliers
  • 2.5mm, 4mm, and 5mm allen wrenches
  • 10mm box/open end wrench
  • Blue LocTite and SuperLube Teflon/Silicon lubricant
Parts Included:
  • Retainer back
  • Retainer clips with heim joint (permanently preset) and 2 6mm flat head allen screws
  • Extension arm with heim join (preset for Sentra) and 6mm jam nut and 6mm socket head cap screws with O ring
  • Pivot body, 6mm Nylox nut and 6mm socket head cap screw
  • Pivot cap and 4mm flat head allen screw

1. Remove the bezel around the lower part of the dash above the console, it just pops out. (Altimas are slightly different)

2. Pop out the boot bezel, from back first (up), then the front (pulling toward you).

3. Leave the boot and knob on.

4. Remove screws on each side of console in front.

5. Remove middle screw under oval plastic piece in the center of the console. (Sentra only)

6. Pull off bezel around rear cup holders and unscrew on each side of rear console. (Sentra only)

7. Pull up e-brake as far as you can, and pull console towards rear and up. Guide boot and bezel through the big hole it snapped into and leave there.

8. Remove the big clip holding right side cable and set aside. You will only need this again if going back to stock.

9. Unscrew 6mm flange nut using 10mm wrench. Remove cable end from shifter and slide cable out of the front of the shifter housing. (Set aside 2 big washers, **you'll need them later** Sentra only)

10. Slip retainer back over cable to behind plastic shifter housing and reinsert cable into frame.

11. Slip retainer clip on so that cable is clipped in groove and plastic is now sandwiched between the two. Use a Blue LocTite and tighten 6mm flat head allen screws.

12. Lubricate shifter post and cable end with SuperLube or other Telfon/Silicone lubricant. **Not WD-40 or similar product**. Install pivot body onto shifter post over small ORings. Firm pressude may be needed. Attach cable end on privot body and install pivot cap sandwiching cable between them. Fasten pivot body and privot cap with 4mm flat head allen screw. Install 6mm Nylox nut to fasten to shifter post until tight. Then loosen 1/4 turn so that pivot body can rotate freely

13. Install extension arm on front heim joint using 6mm allen bolt with Blue LocTite, being sure to keep o-ring in groove.

14. Attach heim join on arm to the pivot on shifter using 6mm allen bolt with Blue LocTite.

** If you are installing this on an Altima, the jam nut between extension arm and heim joint is to adjust the length so that it clears the console boot ** Do not over adjust the length so that the cable does not completely engage the gears. **

15. Reinstall console, (Sentra only) Put 2 big washers in-between the metal of the floor and the bottom of the console to shim up the middle of the console under the middle screw. They'll be there if you want to return to stock. While tightening the screw, force the consol towards the front and passengers side for optimum clearance.

16. Lubricate heim joints with SuperLube or other Teflon/Silicone lubricant. ** Not WD-40 or similar product **

17. Put all the plastic pieces back on and learn how it feels.

The side to side movement is unchanged. Only the front to back movement has changed. There will be an increase in effort to shift. It is simple physics, the more the throw is shortened, there is a corresponding increase in effort to move the cable the same distance.

Installed in Altima shift frame shown below:

Sentra shift shown below:

18. If you've always hated the feel of going into 5th and 6th, remove black spring clip on of orange limiter. Save if you want to return to stock.

19. Some shifter housings have this extra shroud which needs to be removed to clear the pivot body. It will cut easily with a small hand held hacksaw.
