ActiveTuning 02-03.5 Nissan Altima/Sentra STS1 Short Throw Shifter Tools Required:
1. Remove the bezel around the lower part of the dash above the console, it just pops out. 2. Pop out the boot bezel, from the back first (up), then the front (pulling toward you). 3. Leave the boot and knob in. 4. Remove the screws on each side of console in front. 5. Remove middle screw under oval plastic piece in the center of console. 6. Pull off bezel around rear cup holders and unscrew screws on each side of rear console. 7. Pull up e-brake as far as you can, and pull console towards rear and up. Guide boot and bezel through the big hole it snapped into and leave there. 8. Remove big clip holding right side cable and set aside. You will only need this again if going back to stock. 9. Unscrew flange nut holding cable to shifter. Set aside 2 big washers, **you'll need them later.** 10. Slip retainer back over cable to behind plastic and reinsert cable into frame. 11. Slip a retainer clip on so that cable is clipped in groove and plastic is now sandwiched between the two. Use a drop of Blue LocTite and tighten 6mm flat head allen screws.
12. Install pivot body onto shifter post, attach cable and install pivot cap sandwiching cable between them with 4mm flat head allen screw. Install 6mm Nylox nut to fasten to shifter post. ** If you are installing this on an Altima, remove the jam nut between extension arm and heim joint to shorten the length before installing. The crimped side of the hiem joint should face the pivot body** 13. Installing extension arm on front heim joint using 6mm allen bolt with Blue LocTite, being sure to keep o-ring in groove. 14. Attach heim joint on arm to the pivot on shifter using 6mm allen bolt with Blue LocTite. 15. Reinstall console, BUT put 2 big washers in-between the metal of the floor and the bottom of the console to shim up the middle of the console under the middle screw. They'll be there if you want to return to stock. 16. Lubricate heim joints with SuperLub or other Teflon/Silicone lubricant. **Not WD-40 or similar product** 17. Put all the plastic pieces back on and learn how it feels.
The side to side movement is unchanged. Only the front to back movement has changed. There will be an increase in effort to shift. It is simple physics, the more the throw is shortened, there is a corresponding increase in effort to move the cable the same distance. Installed in Altima shift frame shown below:
Sentra shift frame shown below:
18. If you've always hated the feel of going into 5th and 6th, remove black spring clip on top of orange limiter. Save if you want to return to stock. 19. Some shifter housings have this extra shroud which needs to be removed to clear the pivot body. It will cut easily with a small hand held hacksaw. |
