Your Cellphone Could Damage Your Nissan Or Infiniti Intelligent Key
May 24th, 2007 by Dave
Any of you Nissan or Infiniti owners with the intelligent key (I-Key), you’ll have to start making sure to keep your cellphone and key fob in different pockets until Fall. According to Nissan, if the fob is touched by the cellphone while a call is in progress, the software in the key can be erased…permanently. Nissan is working on a fix, and is planning to replace all of the keys as soon as they do. In the meantime, dealerships are stocking up in case you have an issue before then.

i work for a nissan dealership here in las vegas and the only car that is affected by this minor recall is the 2007 Nissan Altima sedans and most likely the new Altima coupe is the one that will get affected by this recall. Trust me the other products with the intelligent key like the Versa, Maxima, Sentra and Murano aren’t affected. As for the Infiniti vehicles that are affected with this minor recall those owners will likely get a letter from Nissan North America’s main headquarters, which our dealership did. All those owners of the new 2007 Altima’s will get modified Intelligent keys by early fall and it will be no cost to them and they will likely get a letter from the Nissan dealerships that they bought the car and a letter from Nissan North America stating when they will be in. Our dealership is making sure that every delivered 2007 Altima gets the letters that were sent from Nissan North America and we are making an effort to get the word out.
Thanks for the update Nestle. According to the article, they specifically mention the 2007 G35 and the Altima….I should have been more specific with that in my post, but it’s good to know what some dealerships like yours are doing about it.
I can duplicate the key error. Move your perimeter device behind the cell phone. Attempt to start the car. It won’t… move the key in front of the cell phone and walaaaaa!. I’ve never lost any programming, so far. 07 Maxima
chris d. for some reason this recall hasn’t affected the other cars in the lineup that is equipped with the intelligent key in the Nissan lineup. so far it is only the 07 altima and G35 sedans.
I bought my daughter a altima 2007 and sent her to college. It left her standed one night because of her cell phone and the intelligent key got to close. I had never heard of this being a problem and I never got a letter from Nissan. I wish some one would have let us know. She was scared when her car wouldn’t start. She another key at her dorm and she was able to have some pick her up and get the extra key. What if she would have been one her 5 hrs trip home from school and stopped to get gas or something?
Um,
In the event of a failure of the electronics of the “intelligent” key,the car can be opened with the standard mechanical key located within the body of the “intelligent” key, and started by inserting the “intelligent” key in the little hole next to the steering wheel. Perhaps your dear one should read the operating instructions before hopping in a vehicle and buzzing off to college.
Um, Victor
If the intelligent(wireless) part of the key stop working, the car is not going to start with just the key, it is immobilized, try leaving your remote far away and start the car with the key, what do you know, the car won’t start, perhaps you should read the manual before posting comments
Ummmmmmmmmm
Mr. Smith
(yeah Right)
Listen Grasshopper, and learn.
Just as they provided a mechanical means to enter and secure the vehicle independently of the “intelligent key” , Nissan, inTheir infinite wisdom, also provided a means to start the vehicle in the event of a failure of the electronics of the “intelligent Key” (read my original post again carefully Skippy) notice where I differentiate between the mechanical key (inside the hidey-hole of the “intelligent key”), and the “intelligent key” as a whole.
According to the owners manual, in the event of the battery being
low (read that not enough juice to power the transmitter) the vehicle may be started by inserting the (entire) “intelligent key” in the hole in the lower dashboard to the left of the steering wheel, pressing down on the break pedal, and pressing the Start button
Oh, by the way Skippy,
You’d look pretty SILLY trying to start the 2007 Altima with “just the key” as you propose in your RANT, as there is no provision for that starting option in the vehicles’ ignition system. Only what it says in the OWNERS’ MANUAL. You have READ IT, haven’t you? NO? Surprise Surprise!
Perhaps YOU should read the posts more CAREFULLY before you respond HASTILY and look FOOLISH.
Have a nice day,
VMD

[edit] In-Dash Intelligent Key Port
For your convenience and to start the vehicle if the Intelligent Key battery becomes discharged, insert your Intelligent Key into the In-Dash Port.
Push the Intelligent Key completely into the port until you feel it engage.
Note: If you leave the Intelligent Key in the port when the ignition switch is toggled to LOCK (OFF) and the driver’s door is opened:
the amber indicator to the right of the port will flash,
a repetitive beep tone will sound, and
the Intelligent Key Removal indicator will illuminate on the dot matrix display between the tachometer and speedometer.
Push in on the Intelligent Key to remove it from the port and take it with you as you exit.
